3 ways to get your CV ready for the year ahead
The New Year is on the horizon, and January tends to represent a clean slate if you’re looking for a new role or a whole new career. The Christmas break is the perfect time – between bouts of relaxing, mince pies and parties – to spruce up your CV. Here are our three big top tips to get you ready for January!
1. Get in the right frame of mind
The daily grind takes a lot of stamina, mental endurance and can be emotionally challenging to say the least, so it’s important to stay healthy with a mix of exercise, meditation, sleep and good nutrition to keep you fuelled for your busy career!
When fatigue sets in, you’ll experience that all-over ‘tired’ feeling of reaching a career slump, which can slow the drive for another challenge. Take some time to remind yourself of your main goals and why it’s worth pushing forwards.
2. Know your market
Understanding the job market is like catching the wave of the latest trends and demands – and tuning in to that will keep you relevant. It’s important to do your research on the types of companies you want to work for, tailor your CV to what they want, and brush up on any skills you’ll need for those types of roles. Make this a priority, especially if you’ve been with an employer for a long while.
Your LinkedIn profile should reflect what is already written on your CV, as many recruiters will check you out there before they even invite you to an interview.

3. Tighten up your CV before you put it out there
Firstly, give it a style makeover. It’s all too easy to weigh down your CV with excessive facts and figures. Ruthlessly edit out the jargon, and check that you’re mirroring the key skills listed on a typical job spec for the jobs you’re going for.
Look over the structure and formatting of your CV; it should be clear, concise and easy to read.
Your profile is the ‘elevator pitch’ of your CV, and gives the recruiter a flavour of what you’re about and why they should hire you. Make it punchy and short, outlining your desired career path and the skills and experience you offer.
A CV should ideally be two pages long, so beware not to pile too much information about previous roles that are not relevant to your current job search or career goals. Bullet points are your friend; have just enough to show your progression.
